Model driven software automatic development and customization

Financial Entity:: Fundación Caixa Castelló-Bancaixa

Duration: January 2010-December 2012

Objective: The approach for Model Driven Architecture (MDA) software development is a paradigm that raises the possibility of depicting a specific domain with a model. By means of transformations between these models it may be possible to generate software automatically. This paradigm suggests a three level hierarchy model: Computation Independent Model (CIM), Platform Independent Model (PIM) and Platform Specific Model. Reviewing the literature we can conclude that in the last few years, important progresses in modelling PIM and PSM levels have been made and in obtaining automatic transformation from PIM to PSM and from PSM to code.

However, there are two lines of investigation that are in progress and where it is necessary to make important improvements both in methodological aspects and in the practical application. These lines are: (1) characterize enterprise models at CIM level and their transformation to PIM models, fundamentally due to the complexity of CIM models and the difficulty of finding a method and a technique that makes the model transformation easy and as automatic as possible and (2) the customization from PIM models (therefore, from CIM models too), to a specific domain automatically, from existent software like enterprise management systems ERPs, CRM, SCM and so on.

In this frame, we propose the goal of this investigation project, that can be summarized in the proposal of a method that allows (1) enterprise model at CIM level and automatic transformations to PIM models and (2) customize software in an automatic way from PIM models.We have with us the collaboration of two computing companies for development some activities of the project and to validate the operative ability of the results. One of these companies works in ERP software implantation and the other one in software generation from information models.
