KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES

Financial Entity: Interministerial Commission of Science and Technology(Cicyt)

Duration: December 2003-December 2006

Goals: The knowledge management is nowadays one of the great research fields on which several philosophical and theoretical approaches have been proposed, and different technological solutions have been developed and adapted on it. However, the knowledge management is an concept still in evolution, and it is faced up to serious difficulties for implementing on enterprises. The main cause of this situation is the lack of formal methodologies for guiding the process of development and implementation of this kind of systems. Moreover, there are few practical cases for taking as models, and none of them in the virtual enterprises environment. The objective of this project is established under this general frame. Particularly, the objective is focused to develop an architecture allowing to compile, manage, and apply the knowledge inside a virtual enterprise. The architecture will be formally organized by the following aspects: (1) A methodology for directing the process of development and implementation of a Knowledge Management System in a virtual enterprise; (2) A set of models for allowing to identify, represent, and communicate the knowledge inherent to a virtual enterprise; And (3) The design of a technological infrastructure that allows to store, process, and distribute the knowledge inside a virtual enterprise with the necessary security measures. The data acquisition and the validation of operative capability of results will be performed in collaboration with a virtual enterprise.
